Ladders are invaluable tools but using and maintaining them properly is crucial to ensuring your safety.
Whether you’re using a ladder for home projects or professional work, following these essential safety tips will help you avoid accidents and extend the life of your equipment.
Keep safety your number 1 priority!
1. Adhere to all warnings and guidelines provided by the ladder's manufacturer.
2. Before positioning your ladder, check your environment for potential hazards and mitigate them. These could be the weather, open doors, power lines and sloping/uneven surfaces.
3. Use the right kind of ladder for the job. Pay special attention to the load and industrial rating.
4. Never use a ladder with visible defects or missing parts - inspect it before use!
- ensure there a no cracks in the structure of the ladder, including the rungs
- inspect for rust which will cause areas of weakness
- inspect the feet, specifically the tread/grip
- ensure the ladder locks in to place as it should
- ensure the ladder is clean and dry before use
5. Make sure you're wearing appropriate PPE.
6. Place the ladder on a firm, level surface. Ensure all feet are in contact with the ground and the ladder is stable.
7. When ascending or descending, face the ladder and maintain three points of contact. Avoid overreaching, as this can cause loss of balance.
